Windows 7 ‘Infecting’ Other Operating Systems

If only success could be infectious. If only code quality, performance, security, usability, reliability, improved user experience could spread like a plague from one product to another. With over 60 million licenses sold worldwide in just a few months after release and the incontestable owner of the fastest selling operating system in history, Windows 7 has certainly raised the bar for Microsoft. But the Redmond company is little shy when it comes down to piggyback-riding on the latest version of the Windows client.

Windows 7 PCs Stop Responding After Clean Install on Second Boot

A computer on which Windows 7 has been deployed via a clean install can stop responding completely after the second restart. This issue also affects Windows Server 2008 R2, Microsoft informed, and is related to the 1394 bus driver. According to the Redmond company, machines running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 can also stop responding when customers enable or install a 1394 device.

Unlike Windows Vista RTM, which delivered an extremely poor application compatibility experience to end users, the evolution to Windows 7 is causing extremely few apps to break when installed or run on top of the new operating system. Windows 7 Browser Update Could Open Door for Hacks

Windows 7 Gets 59 New Language Interface Packs (LIPs)

Microsoft is expanding the language support for the latest iterations of its main cash cows, Windows 7 and Office 2010. Specifically, no less than 59 new Language Interface Packs (LIPs) will be made available. The new LIPs are designed to integrate with both Office 2010 and Windows 7. In addition, the Redmond company will also be providing four new LIP additions for the next generation of its development platform, Visual Studio 2010.

Windows 7 Crushes Vista

Coincidentally, yesterday, February 22nd, 2010 is Windows 7’s forth month of general availability, as the operating system hit the shelves on October 22nd, 2009. A research study from Janco Associates indicates that the latest iteration of the Windows client is simply crushing its predecessor in terms of the adoption rate. Statistics released by Janco reveal that Windows 7 uptake is over two times that of Windows Vista’s, as you can see via the graphic included in this article.

Windows 7 Desktop Optimization Pack 2010

Microsoft has labored to tailor its Desktop Optimization Pack solution accelerators to the latest iteration of the Windows client and server. Over 70 Windows 7 RTM Cracks to Be Tackled by Microsoft This Month

Microsoft has apparently done its homework when it comes down to the plethora of cracks designed to illegally activate the latest iteration of its Windows client. The Redmond company identified in excess of 70 illegal activation bypass methods and has been cooking a small surprise for pirates. Come next week, Microsoft will start tackling what it referred to as the known and potentially dangerous activation exploits for Windows 7.

32% of Pirated Windows 7 and Win 7 Cracks Infected with Malware

Almost a third of the pirated copies of Windows 7 and the activation cracks for the operating system are infected with malicious code, and will cause users to infect their own machines, according to Microsoft. Joe Williams, general manager, Genuine Windows, cited data from a study performed by Media Surveillance, a German-based anti-piracy solutions company. At the end of 2009, Media Surveillance grabbed in excess of 500 pirated copies of Windows 7 and exploits designed to bypass the activation process of the OS. The company found that no less than 32% of all the items downloaded contained malicious code.

Microsoft Affirms BSOD, Halts Windows Patch

This time the patch in question (MS10-015) was for a long-unaddressed Windows kernel bug that could enable elevation-of-privilege control by an attacker. The patch, which was contained in Tuesday’s mammoth security update, was based on a security advisory that Microsoft released in late January.

The Windows 7 Application Compatibility List for IT Professionals is a Microsoft Office Excel-based spreadsheet listing software applications which have met Windows 7 Logo Program testing requirements for compatibility with 32-bit and 64-bit Windows 7, and have thereby earned the right to display the Windows 7 Logo Program logo with the application. These products are identified with the compatibility status “Compatible – Windows 7 Logo.”
